Marianna Schnack Hodges
MOHAWK - Marianna Schnack Hodges, formerly of 31 West Center Street, Mohawk, NY, passed away on February 7, 2015 in Rock Hill, SC at the age of 86. She was born on August 10, 1928 in Little Falls, NY, the daughter of the late Daisy Montana Schnack and late Edward Schnack. Educated in Oppenheim, NY schools, Marianna graduated from Oneonta State Teachers College in 1948. She spent most of her career teaching at Mohawk Central School as a third-grade teacher, retiring in 1984. She was consistently assigned the most-challenging students because she could get their attention with the snap of her fingers and teach them what they needed to learn in a firm but caring way.
On August 14, 1948, Marianna married the love of her life, Francis Hodges. He was a native of Oneonta and they fell in love when she attended college there. They settled in Mohawk, NY in 1957 and shared 61 years of love and devotion until Francis passed away on December 27, 2009. Theirs was an enduring and enviable marriage. Together they built a life and legacy that their children and grandchildren proudly hold dear.
After Francis passed away, Marianna moved with family from Mohawk to Rock Hill, SC in 2010. Several members of her family moved to the same area in North and South Carolina and she was surrounded by her family in her final years.
An obituary recounts a person’s life. But all you really need to know about Marianna is the positive influence she had on her entire family. We have cherished memories of late-night chats, summers at the pool, waves from the front window, dinners in a cozy dining room and a perpetual stack of books on her living room end table. An avid reader, Marianna was a brilliant woman who could answer almost every question on Jeopardy. Everyone wanted her on their Trivial Pursuit team. She favored biographical, historical and political books.
Reading was a passion of hers but paled in comparison to the passion she had for her family. She made an art out of worrying about them. In her eyes, worrying was like an insurance policy – if she worried about something, it was less likely to happen. We’ll never know how many catastrophes we averted because of her worry ethic. We were lucky to have her by our sides, loving us unconditionally.
Marianna is survived by her two daughters, Denise Hodges of Charlotte, NC, and Wendy Bartlett and husband, Brian of Rock Hill, SC; her grandchildren, Heather Service Chait and husband, Sergio of Charlotte, NC; Lareina Restive Welch and husband, James of Tega Cay, SC; Larisa Restive Black and husband, Gary of Rock Hill, SC; Mario Restive and girlfriend, Melissa Brower of Syracuse, NY; and Shannon Service DeJohn and husband Travis of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren Julia Chait and Andrew Chait of Charlotte, NC; Sidonie Foster, Everett Welch and Evelyn Welch of Tega Cay, SC; Lilly Black and Tristan Black of Rock Hill, SC; and Charlotte DeJohn of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her younger sister, Marcia Bryan of Macedon, NY and nieces JoEllen Bryan, Jan Ramsey, Jackie White and nephews Jason Bryan and John Bryan.
A memorial service was held in South Carolina after Marianna’s passing in February. A graveside memorial will be held on Friday, July 24 at 11:00am at the Mohawk Cemetery as Marianna’s ashes are laid to rest beside Francis, her partner in life and life beyond. Friends who wish to join her family as they commemorate her life are welcomed to attend.
