Mary P. Zito

MOHAWK – Mary Panko Zito, age 88, formerly of 26 W. Main St., Mohawk, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014, at Sitrin Health Care Center, New Hartford. She was born on January 28, 1926, in Herkimer, the daughter of Charles and Nancy (Kulczyka) Panko, and graduated from Mohawk High School in 1944. Mary was married to Jack D. Zito on August 6, 1949, in Mohawk. He died on June 19, 1994. She owned and operated Mohawk Home Service with her husband, Jack, from 1948 to 1966. They later owned and operated the Mohawk Village Market from 1968 to 1989. Mary and Jack retired to the beautiful Florida Keys where they enjoyed many good times with family and friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed swimming, boating and spending time in the sun. Survivors include her stepson, Jack B. Zito; two grandchildren, Thomas B. and Jack E. Zito; and several nieces and nephews, including Chuck Panko, Jr., and his wife, Maria, of W. Frankfort. She was predeceased by her sisters, Stella Potzner and Molly Whitney, and her brothers, Russell, Rudy and Charles Panko. Mary’s graveside service will be later this spring at a time and date to be announced at Mohawk Cemetery. In keeping with Mary’s wishes, there are no scheduled calling hours at this time. MOHAWK-ILION – Mary (Grzeszczuk) Dygert, age 94, of State Rt. 28, Vickerman Hill Rd., Mohawk, formerly of Ilion, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the Folts Home, Herkimer. She was born on October 13, 1919, in Herkimer, the daughter of John and Anna (Koral) Grzeszczuk. Mary graduated from Shoemaker Hill School District No. 9 (one room school house) on Shoemaker Hill Rd., Mohawk. She was married to Robert “Bob” Dygert on September 18, 1943, at St. Joseph’s Church, Herkimer. He died on January 11, 2000. She was a former member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, and the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion. Mary enjoyed gardening and traveling. Survivors include her son, Edward “Eddie” Dygert, with whom she resided in Mohawk; her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and John Bereza, of Queensbury, NY; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Mary Dygert, of Mohawk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by four sisters, Katherine Lawrence, Frances Serour, and Helen and Paulene Schafranek; and three brothers, Stanley, Stanley and Tony Grzeszczuk. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Mary’s Funeral Service on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at 1:00 p.m., at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened location, at 102 West St., Ilion, with Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church of Mohawk, officiating. Spring burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer. In keeping with Mary’s wishes, there are no scheduled calling hours. LITTLE FALLS - Mrs. Helen C. Agne, age 82, a long time resident of Little Falls, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Helen was born May 25, 1931, in Town of Minden, the daughter of the late William and Hazel (Ering) Moshier. Helen worked for many years at the Allegro Shoe Co. A loving person by nature, her life’s passion was centered around her family. She was especially fond of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She was married to Ross W. Agne who died in 1995. Helen is survived by her sons, Larry, Leslie, Hollis and Harlan Smith; and a daughter, Evona Hobbs. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at 3:00 PM from the Enea Family Funeral Home, 24 West Monroe Street, Little Falls, NY, with the Rev. HERKIMER: Mrs. Rena (Mornelli )Scialdo , 87, of Steuben Road , Herkimer , New York and Lauderdale By the Sea, Florida, passed away peacefully at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 with the love and support of her family by her side. Rena was born on March 13, 1926 in Little Falls, New York, a daughter of the late Angelo Mornelli and Isola (Forestieri) Mornelli. She was a lifelong valley resident living in Little Falls and Herkimer. Rena received her education in Little Falls schools. She and Rudolph F. Scialdo were married by the Reverend Lynch in St. Joseph's Church, Little Falls, and together shared a long and devoted union for sixty three years. Mrs. Scialdo was employed for many years as an associate at Derbys in the Village of Herkimer and as a manager at Grand Leader in Little Falls. She also co-owned the Herkimer Diamond Mines and KOA Kampground with her husband from 1980-1997 and served as the property's concierge for many years. Rena volunteered with the Parent Teachers Association at St Joseph's Church and School in Herkimer, was an honorary member of the Herkimer Lions Club and was a parishioner of Sts. Anthony & Joseph Church, Herkimer. Rena had a great passion for the sunshine, beach and water aerobics with the “Water Rockettes” girls. She was a selfless, loving, caring woman who was always concerned about the needs of those she loved. She lived life to the fullest, and “What” a sense of humor!!!! Rena loved socializing in the good company of her family and friends, and always treasured cooking her Tuesday Pasta Nights. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She immensely enjoyed her family and friends and was very endeared to her three grandsons. Rena was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She leaves behind her husband Rudolph Scialdo; a daughter, Dr. Renee Scialdo Shevat and husband, Sam Shevat; son, Rudolph Scialdo II and wife, Deborah Dempsey Scialdo; and three beloved grandchildren, Samuel Shevat III ,Rudolph John Shevat and William Scialdo. She also leaves behind one sister, Olga Fusco; brothers, Harry Mornelli and Bonnie Loschiavo, Ronnie Mornelli and Barbara Schwartz, Lucy Yturralde and numerous nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. Her brother Gino Mornelli, brother-in-law, Greg Fusco, sister-in-law Connie Mornelli, sister, Elda Varano and husband Greg Varano, Roland and Marian Scialdo, William and Mary Scialdo, Michael and Lena Scialdo, Ida Scialdo Guzzo and Thomas Guzzo, Andrew and Marie Scialdo, Marshall and Lucy Scialdo; nieces Kathy Varano Bortniak and Andrea Scialdo, nephews Benjamin Fusco , Salvatore Fusco, Gregory Paul Mornelli and great nephews Sgt Marc Anthony Scialdo and Cory Scialdo, predeceased Rena. HERKIMER - Infant twins Chloe Marie and Louie Giuseppe Virkler were born on Saturday, March 1, 2014 to parents Jessica McCollum and Kyle Virkler at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, NY. The family was blessed with the beautiful babies as they went to their heavenly home. DOLGEVILLE – Mr. Richard A. Morris, Sr., age 49, of State Route 29A, Salisbury, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 2, 2014 in Little Falls Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at his residence. Richard was born on July 1st, 1964 the son of Elizabeth (Atkinson) Morris of Herkimer, NY and was educated in Stratford School. He was employed by Rawlings- Adirondack Industries of Dolgeville and also worked with Lawrence "Mr. Woody" Bulluck in Stratford cutting and selling wood. He is survived by his Mother Elizabeth "Betty" Morris of Herkimer, his sons Richard A. Morris Jr. of Salisbury and Brandon M. Morris of Dolgeville, his sisters Bonnie Jans and Michelle Gillard, a brother Stanley Grassel, several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews & Cousins. He was predeceased by a sister Debbie Morris. Graveside services will be held in the Spring in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery Rt. 29 Salisbury Center at a time to be announced. EAST HERKIMER - Josip Jusup, age 96, formerly of East Herkimer, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Masonic Care Community, Utica, NY. He was born on March 15, 1917, in Seline, Croatia, the son of Ivan and Yurka Jusup, and attended school in Croatia. On December 28, 1947, he was married to Julia Sadlon in Manhattan, New York City. She died on January 7, 2007. Josip served in the Merchant Marines. He was of the Catholic Faith. Survivors include his Daughter, Anne Kucerak and her husband, John, of Herkimer; his sister, Bozica Zuvanovic; two nephews, Nicola Bucic and wife, Kata, and Carl Gessman and wife, Donna; and one niece, Elizabeth Alfano and husband, Andrew. He was predeceased by several siblings in Europe. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at 4:00 p.m., at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 N. HERKIMER: Patricia E. “Pat” (Dypa) Rickard, 79, a lifelong Herkimer resident, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. Pat was born in Herkimer, NY on March 21, 1934, the daughter of the late Anthony and Gladys (Hamelik) Dypa. She was a 1952 graduate of Herkimer High School and later continued her education by attending Herkimer County Community College and receiving an Associate’s Degree. In August of 1953 at St. Joseph’s Church in Herkimer, Pat was united in marriage to Kenneth Rowland Rickard, sharing 20 years of unconditional love and happiness until his passing on April 10, 1973. Pat spent more than 30 years working at various OTB locations throughout the valley. She also, at one time owned and operated her own hairdressing salon. Pat was a member of the Herkimer Polish Club, did volunteer work for Catholic Charities of Herkimer County, worked as a domestic violence hotline consultant and was a parishioner of STs. Anthony & Joseph Church, Herkimer. In her spare time, she enjoyed the casino and spending time with her canine companion, Pumpkin. She is survived by her sister, Roberta Farouche of Frankfort, her niece and godchild, Alesia Forlenza and her husband Anthony of Frankfort; cousins, Paul and Peggy Remizowski and their daughter, Elizabeth of New York Mills and Ronald and Paula Hamelik of Miami, FL. Pat is also survived by her long time companion’s children, Candiss Potter and her husband Bill of Frankfort and their children, Jaime and Jeremy; Dr. Joseph Morra and his wife Maria of Baldwinsville and their children, Christine and Joey and Debbie Voorhees of Newberg, OR. She was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah E. Rickard who passed away on April 16, 2003, her longtime beloved companion for over 30 years, Joseph H. Morra who passed away on August 30, 2012 and many aunts and uncles. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Pat’s memory may contribute to the Herkimer County Humane Society; envelopes will be made available at the funeral home. MOHAWK: Frank R. Spacapan, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2014 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer with the love and support of his family. Born in Little Falls, NY on January 8, 1927, Frank was the son of the late Louis and Ethel (Smith) Spacapan. He was raised and educated locally and was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. On June 2, 1951, he was united in marriage to the former Marlene Metot at St. Mary’s Parish House in Little Falls; the couple sharing 62 years of love and devotion to one another. Frank was employed as a supervisor for Little Falls Color Print for many years. He was a member of the DeCarlo Staffo Post of Little Falls, the Herkimer American Legion and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Little Falls. Frank truly loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved his camp at Caroga Lake; enjoying it as often as he could. Blended with his extremely kind and generous nature, he was a supportive patriarch to his family. In truth, Frank’s family enhanced his life and they were a major motivation of his happiness. “We love you to the moon and back.” He is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene of Mohawk; his son, Ronald and his wife Pat of Colchester, VT; his daughter, Joann Fannin and her husband Larry of Shrub Oak, NY; his cherished grandchildren, Kathleen McDonald and husband Steve, Kelly Spacapan, Kimberly Spacapan, Nicholas Fannin and wife Kristen, Jacquelyn Fannin, Wendy Boutin, William Hoag, and Tammy Jette; great grandchildren, Bailie and Brennan McDonald; a sister, Lois Spacapan and Jack Gallager of Tucson, AZ; a son-in-law, Roger Jette and wife Debra; a special niece and nephew, Linda and Jim Metott; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. He was predeceased by a daughter, Debra Jette. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital would be appreciated; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Born in Lutcher, LA on November 10, 1960, Todd is the son of James Bertrand and the late Shirley (Corona) Bertrand. He was a graduate of R. L. Turner High School in Carrollton, TX and was married to the former Colleen Savage on September 23, 2001 in Inlet, NY. Todd was employed at 99 Restaurant in New Hartford. He is survived by his wife, Colleen; his father and step mother, James and Gayle Bertrand; a daughter, Danielle Bertrand of Rome; his step children, Amanda Mroz and husband Kevin of Herkimer, Mathew Pendrak and wife Jennifer of Buffalo; his brothers, Kenneth Bertrand and Christopher Bertrand; his step grandchildren, Lilyana, Ava and Henry Pendrak; special nieces, Lauren, Erica, and Alicia Bertrand and many cousins. HERKIMER – Mr. Frank D. Tangorra of Herkimer, NY, who was awarded a Purple Heart for his service with the U.S. Army during World War II, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning March 11, 2014 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, NY. Born in Herkimer on August 27, 1924, Frank was the son of the late Philip and Mary (Buttiglione) Tangorra and was educated in Herkimer schools. A lifelong resident of Herkimer New York, Mr. Tangorra attended Herkimer schools. He was drafted into the service on April 1, 1943. He left the United States in September of 1943 and arrived in the African – Middle – Eastern Theater in September 1943. During his time with the Army he was critically wounded in Italy in January of 1944 at the young age of 19 at which time he was the recipient of the prestigious Purple Heart. He arrived back to the United States in April 1944. In September of 1954 Frank joined in marriage with the former Eileen Rathbun. The couple shared in 45 years of marriage until her passing in July 1999. Mr. and Mrs. Tangorra were of the Catholic faith and had a deep appreciation for St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer. Frank overcame his very serious combat injuries by becoming an active member of our community. Frank was a good member of the Tony R. George Post as well as a life member of the Herkimer Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post #4915. He was a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Frank had a passion for the Beagle breed of dog which led to his involvement with the Mid Valley Beagle Club. He was a member of the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club as well as the Sprite club of Dolgeville. An avid sportsman, one of his fondest memories was that in 1967 & 1969 he won the Genesee Fishing contest for Northern Pike. He absolutely loved to hunt and fish and sincerely revolved his life around his brothers and nephews and his entire family. He is survived by his siblings: sisters: Bella Aiello and Lucy Marollo of Herkimer; brothers: Michael Tangorra and his wife Joan of Ohio; and Philip “Junior” Tangorra and his wife Elizabeth of Frankfort; sisters: Janet Palmieri and husband William of Herkimer, Palma Calenzo and husband David of Herkimer and Kathy Barrette and husband Frank of Ilion; his aunt: Bella Bono of Frankfort; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and In Laws. He was preceded in death by sisters: Vita Palumbo and Rose Maida; brothers: Alex Tangorra, Cosimo Tangorra and Richard Tangorra, and a sister Elaine Zito. Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 15, 2014 at 9:15 AM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer, NY and at 10:00 AM from St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street Herkimer where Mr. Tangorra’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor. Spring burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer at a time to be announced. Calling hours at the Enea Family funeral home on North Washington Street in Herkimer are Friday March 14th., from 4 until 8 PM. The members of the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post #4915 will offer services Friday evening at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. FORT PLAIN – Mr. Earl Paul, age 71, of Hancock Street, Fort Plain, NY passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening March 15, 2014, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam, NY. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam, especially mentioning Danielle Colistra and Dr. Todd. He was born on August 14, 1942 in Gloversville, NY a son of the late Asa and Virginia (Van Avery) Paul and was educated in Gloversville & Johnstown schools. He was a lifelong resident of the “Twin Cities” area. He was united in marriage with the former Audrey J. Marlitt on April 18, 1964. The couple shared in a loving union of 25 years until the passing of Mrs. Paul on July 18, 1989. It is known that Earl was a master leather tradesman. His craft was displayed through his work with various leather mills in the local leather industry. He was extremely proud to be that of a wet leather worker. He was a traditional gunsmith and an avid gun collector. He also enjoyed hunting as well as the outdoors in general. He last worked with Traditions Leather in Gloversville. He is survived by his children: Linda Schaffer and her husband Jim of the Town of Glen (Fultonville); Earlene Polak of Perth, NY; Shirley Ross and her husband John of Gloversville; grandchildren: Mathew Jasewicz of Perth; Zachary Dorn of Gloversville; Marjorie Dorn of Gloversville and Brandon Polak of Amsterdam; his brothers; Ron Paul and wife Diane of Alaska and Gordy Paul and his wife Iva of Texas; as well as extended family. He was predeceased by a brother Jim Paul and a sister Dorothy Kretser. Funeral services will be held on Friday evening March 21, 2014 at 7:00 PM from The Enea Family Funeral Home, 9 Center Street, St. Johnsville NY.
