John J. Macrina

HERKIMER. John J. Macrina, Jr., 78, a lifelong Herkimer resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Valley Health Services, Herkimer. His family and friends had been at his side during his illness. Born in the family home on Dewey Ave. in Herkimer on November 16, 1935 John was the son of the late John J. and Mildred (Lucy) Macrina, Sr. Raised and educated locally, John attended Herkimer schools and he honorably served his country with the United States Army from 1955-1959. He married the former Karen Goerger on June 26, 1961 in Ilion; the couple shared 52 years of commitment and unconditional love toward one another. John worked for many years as a cabinet maker for Hales Manufacturing Company, Herkimer. He always maintained a high moral code and a conservative nature. John was a fine example of an honorable man and a good husband, father and role model to his family. John was an active member of the church, its activities and the jail ministry. John taught religious education for many years, held bible studies and ministered musically to the HARC residents. John expended the most energy and love as patriarch of his cherished family. Spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren came first and he will be sadly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen; his children, Mark and Katie Macrina and Tony and Carol Macrina all of Mohawk, Matthew and Sue Macrina of Stittville, Michael and Julie Macrina of Virginia, Michele Macrina of Herkimer and Daniel and Amy Macrina of Virginia; his beloved grandchildren, Mark John and Carl Macrina, Brandon and Brittany Macrina, Brenna Macrina, Jacob and Adam Macrina, Antonio Morra, Noah Macrina and Sarah and Laura Yaghy; great grandchildren, Mackenzy and Lotus Macrina. He is also survived by his brother, George Macrina of Herkimer; his sisters, Mary Bunce and husband Don of Ilion and Shirley DeForrest of Herkimer, in-laws, Dawn and Tom Groom and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 3:00-7:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be made to the Herkimer-Mohawk Faith Food Pantry; envelopes will be available at the funeral home or send to: Herkimer-Mohawk Faith; Food Pantry Box 224; Herkimer, NY 13350. The family would like to thank Dr. Canary and the staff at the Herkimer Cancer Center for their great care. The family would like to also thank the Valley Health staff for the personal care that was given to John. John's funeral service and Celebration of Life will commence on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 9:30 AM at the funeral home. MOHAWK – Mrs. Pauline J. Thibodeau, age 79, of Walnut Street in Mohawk, NY passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in the town of New Hartford, NY. She was born on February 5, 1935 in New York City a daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Davis) Rywalt. She graduated from New York City schools. Her marriage to Ray H. Thibodeau took place in 1977 in Canajoharie. The couple have lived in the Mohawk area since 1988. Pauline last worked with Beechnut in Canajoharie as a bubble gum wrapper. Mr. and Mrs. Thibodeau are members of the Mohawk Reformed Church. Survivors include her husband Ray H. Thibodeau at home; her children: Dorothy Glidewell and husband Guy of Herkimer; Darren Thibodeau and wife Marsha of California; Dawn deFreitas of Massachusets; and David Thibodeau and wife Beverly of Florida; seven grandchildren: Natalie, Thomas, Stephanie, Natalie, Laura, Emilee, and Brennan; along with nieces nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved brother Maurice Bernard “Butch” Eisen on September 12, 2006. FRANKFORT: June B. Smithson, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 18, 2014 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. Born in Tupper Lake, NY on May 29, 1935, June was the daughter of the late Gerald and Isabelle (Blair) Barrett. She was a graduate of Mohawk High School Class of 1953. On December 12, 1953, she married Roger David Smithson with whom she shared a loving relationship filled with great affection and admiration. Roger passed away on May 24, 1978. June worked for many years at Duofold, Ilion. She was a selfless, loving, caring woman who was always concerned about the needs of those she loved. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the center of her heart and life. She enjoyed having Christmas gatherings with her children and grandchildren at her home and loved her camp on Hooper Dooper Road in the Town of Ohio. She enjoyed the common pleasures of life like playing bingo and going to the casino. June was a member of the AARP, Red Hat Society, Widowed Persons Service (WPS), Eastern Star and the Columbia Center Community Church. She is survived by her children, Donna Felker and husband Larry of Ilion, David Smithson and wife Linda of Mohawk, Aaron Smithson and wife Mary Jane of Columbia Center, Donald Smithson and wife Sandra of West Winfield and Jay Smithson and his companion Robin DePietro of Columbia Center; her cherished 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her sisters, Geraldine Valasek and husband David, Leona Comes and Victoria Becker; her brother Arthur Barrett and wife Eileen and many nieces, nephews. She also leaves behind her feline companion, Lucky, who provided her much solace and love. She was predeceased by her siblings, John, Lucy, Virginia, Mary, Lillian, and Gladys. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Road, Ilion, NY (Town of Frankfort) 315-894-8000. UTICA: Ralph A. Zammiello,73, passed away peacefully at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare, New Hartford, on Friday, April 18, 2014 surrounded by the love and support of his family and friends at his side. Born in Utica, N.Y. on September 16, 1940, Ralph was the son of the late Andrew and Lucy (Cricentti) Zammiello. Raised and educated locally, he was a graduate of Proctor High School and continued his education by attending Long Beach College in California. An early interest in antiques grew into his lifelong occupation as an antiques dealer, and he owned and operated Antiques Plus for more than 30 years. Ralph also worked with his two cherished lifelong friends, Roland S. Randall and Father Steven A. Scarcia, to develop and operate Portobello Inn in Herkimer. Ralph’s love of travel took him to a number of countries, where he savored various cuisines. He was a natural in the kitchen, most especially cooking the food of his Italian “Calabrian” heritage. Kind and generous, Ralph was devoted to his family and friends. His faith was deep and strong, seeing him through many difficult times and he found much fulfillment by regularly attending Mass at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Little Falls. He is survived by his brother, Carmen J. Zammiello and his wife Janice of Clark Mills; a sister-in-law, Alfrida Zammiello and her family and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his cherished friends Roland Randall and Father Steven Scarcia and so many other dear friends. He was predeceased by his brothers, Anthony C. and Andrew R. Zammiello. HERKIMER: Anthony Peter Polus, II, 70, a long time Herkimer resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown, with his loving family by his side. Born in Syracuse, NY on January 15, 1944, Peter was the son of the late Anthony Peter and Mary (Branck) Polus. He was a graduate of Herkimer High School and furthered his education by attending Syracuse University and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. On November 26, 1966, Peter was united in marriage to the former Gail Lauer with whom he shared a wonderful and loving relationship filled with great affection and admiration. Peter began his working career with General Electric in Shemya, Alaska. Later in his 50 year career he was the founder of ADS of Mohawk, Petroleum Systems and was a Manufacturer Representative for Peter Polus Company (PPC). Peter’s ambitions were to be a manufacturer and keep his children close to him by providing employment for each of them and in 1992 he founded Fiberdyne Labs of Frankfort. He currently held the position of Chairman of the Board for Fiberdyne Labs. The patriarch of his family, Peter loved and protected his family unconditionally and anytime he was surrounded by his family was precious time. During his childhood years he loved to speed skate and took part in skating competitions and barrel jumping on ABC’s Wide World of Sports and was a member of the AAU Swimming Team. He loved to travel, especially to Key West with his wife and enjoyed playing tennis and chess, practicing Systema and Aikido and skiing with his grandchildren. Peter also had a gift for writing and was the author of 2 books, The Legend of Beardslee Castle and Gage Carson. He was very fond of animals and was a huge supporter of the Humane Society. A large Republican supporter, he established the Ambassador Club for the Republican Party for Herkimer County and at one time held the position of Trustee for the Village of Herkimer. He was also Town Judge for the Town of Herkimer for 16 years. Peter was the past president of the Herkimer County Magistrates Association and was a member of the Herkimer Elk’s Lodge. Although he had many professional accomplishments, his greatest passion and strongest loyalties belonged with his family, who will miss him dearly. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Gail; his children, Anthony and Shaula Polus, III, Chad and Jennifer Polus and Heather and Mark Mosny all of Herkimer. He also leaves his grandchildren, Zachary Zaborek, Maxwell Polus, Zachary, Nathaniel, Abigail and Jillian Polus, Alexis and Justin Swieton, and Meara and Peter Mosny; his brother, James Polus and his wife Noreen of New Hampshire; his in-laws, Dean Ouderkirk, Gwen Conroy and Bill Gahan, and many nieces and nephews. Peter had a special place in his heart for animals and also leaves behind his canine friends, Sami and Mandy. He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemarie Ouderkirk and a granddaughter, Bella Polus Mosny. The family is grateful to the wonderful staff of the Bassett Medical Center ICU and to Dr. Travis Hodgdon for the wonderful care given to Peter during his time spent there. In lieu of floral offerings, expressions of sympathy in the form of donations may be considered to the Herkimer County Humane Society; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 28, 2014 beginning with prayer at 9:15 a.m. from the funeral home and at 10:00 a.m. from St. Francis de Sales Church, North Bellinger Street Herkimer, where Peter’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor. Mrs. Julia Agnes Carpenter 80 of 942 Military Road Town of Salisbury, died Tuesday morning April 22nd, 2014 at her residence of natural causes. She was born on October 27, 1933 in the Town of Ephratah, the daughter of William and Julie (Rose) Flint and was educated in rural schools. Her marriage to Howard Carpenter Jr. took place on November 29, 1952 in the Methodist Church in Ft. Palin, New York. Mr. Carpenter predeceased her on August 9, 2009. Julia was employed for many years in local companies including the Allegro Shoe Company of Little falls and she retired from the former Daniel green shoe Company several years ago. She was of the Methodist Faith and personally enjoyed the chance of Bingo and going to the casino for their games of chance. Surviving are her children Howard E. Carpenter of Dolgeville, Joseph and Ronald Carpenter both of Salisbury, her daughters Lorraine and Ann Carpenter both of Salisbury, several grandchildren of which eight of them lived with their grandmother since birth. Funeral services will be held Saturday April 26th, 2014 at 11 AM at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. Pastor Marvin Isum will officiate. Burial will follow in the Salisbury Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 6-8 PM.

CLINTON: Kenneth Barry Firman,79, of Clinton, NY passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at his home. Born on October 2, 1934 in Troy NY, he was the son of the late Kenneth Guy and Emily (Scott) Firman. He was a graduate of Albany High School, Albany Business College and Jones College, Orlando, FL. Kenneth retired from the US Navy in October of 1973, after 20 years of service. On May 1, 1976, he married the former Beverly Joan Miller at The United Methodist Church in Ilion and they resided 25 years in Orlando and Deland, FL. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Beverly; his daughters, Marlene Firman, Darlene Lackey, Cynthia Bruce, Teresa Curran and sons, Kenneth and Michael Firman all of Cleveland, OH. Burial will take place in the Firman Family Plot in Mohawk Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Kenneth’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Harry J. and Kevin E. HERKIMER – Mrs. Beverly Ann (Dunckel) Matusik, age 71, of Park Avenue, Herkimer, NY passed away on Tuesday April 22, 2014 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Heathcare in the Town of New Hartford, NY. She was born January 26, 1943 in Ilion, NY, a daughter of the late Harvey and Elizabeth (Levi) Dunckel. Bev. worked as a secretary with Remington Arms in Ilion. Her children are Paul D. Matusik, Jr. (Vicky) and James H. Matusik; her granddaughter, M.J. Matusik; her siblings, Harvey, Arthur, and Martin. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul D. Matusik, Sr. and siblings David and Katherine. Her funeral arrangements have been planned with The Enea Family Funeral Home, 220 North Washington Street, Herkimer, NY. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday April 28, 2014 from 2 until 3 PM. A prayer service will follow at 3:00 PM at the funeral home chapel. Mr. Claude E. “Digger” Lasher 76 of 36 South Helmer Avenue Dolgeville, died Thursday evening April 24th, 2014 at his residence of natural causes. Claude was born on January 13, 1938, in Cooperstown, New York, the son of Howard and Ruth (Jacobson) Lasher and was raised by his grandparents Claude and Daisy (Duseler) Jacobson. A lifelong resident of Dolgeville he graduated from Dolgeville High School class of 1957. His marriage to the former Kathleen Perkins took place on April 25, 1964 in the Stratford Baptist Church. They would have celebrated 50 years of marriage on the 25th. Claude was employed for 51 years by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company also known as Adirondack Bat Company. In addition to being employed there he also worked for his grandfather while he was in business at the Jacobson Funeral Home in Dolgeville. He continued to work at the former Nielsen Funeral Home, Drier Funeral Home and the Buck Funeral Home before joining the staff at the Roberts Funeral Home where he was an associate for over 30 years. Because of his funeral home employment he was known as “Digger” by his many friends. He was a former member of the Dolgeville Fire Department, the Dolgeville Ambulance Corps and the Dolgeville Masonic Lodge. In 1971 he was honored by the Dolgeville Fire Department for saving his neighbors life from a burning home. He especially enjoyed growing vegetables and working with his grandson Nathan on little jobs around the house. Another pleasure was taking Sunday rides to view the beauty of our countryside. Surviving him is his wife Kathleen, his daughters Marie Lasher and her children Nathan and Braelynn, who were the “Light of his life and was always there for him”, a daughter Michele Lasher and her companion Paul Puleo Jr. of Frankfort. A special Sister in Law Eileen Muller. Additional survivors are 2 brothers in law and their wives and 4 Sister in laws. Services will be held on Thursday May 1st 2014 at 7PM at the Roberts & Enea Funeral Home 3 Faville Avenue Dolgeville. Calling hours are from 5-7 PM. Pastor Gertrude Ortlieb will officiate at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Kathy and her daughters would like to offer a Special Thank You to all who called and or visited him during his illness. Additional Thanks are offered to the Staffs’ at Bassett Hospital, Little Falls Hospital, Faxton- St. Lukes Hospital and the Masonic Care Community along with Hospice and Palliative Care, and additionally a Special Thank You to Dr. Michael Abraham., who was his personal physician. HERKIMER – Mrs. Olga (Sokerka) Zajac, age 90, a longtime resident of Herkimer, NY and beloved wife of Richard Zajac, passed away on Thursday morning, April 24, 2014, at Folts Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation, Herkimer, NY. She was born October 20, 1923 in Little Falls, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Dulna) Sokerka. She was educated in Little Falls. Her marriage to Richard J. Zajac took place October 22, 1949 at Holy Trinity Church in Utica, NY with Reverend Bernard A. Janczewski officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Zajac had so much fun together in life. They enjoyed travelling and camping and Mrs. Zajac was an avid snowmobiler. They had a beautiful trailer and boat. The boat was named “Manhatten.” She loved to golf and had even won many awards with the Herkimer Garden Club with her gardening ability and her Christmas displays. She loved to crochet and was especially fond of creating afghan’s and giving them to family and friends. She last worked as a computer assembler at Mohawk Data Sciences in Herkimer. She attended St. Francis De Sales Church and was a charter member of the Herkimer Lady Elk’s. Years ago she assisted her husband’s family at the Zajac Bakery on King Street in Herkimer. Survivors include her beloved husband of over 64 years, Richard J., at home; many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Joseph Sokol and wife, Rebecca, of St. Johnsville, Sandra Rasmussen and husband, John, of California, Mary Ann and Ed Mamrosh, of Dolgeville, John and Liz Sokerka, of Florida, Frank Arcuri and Wanda, of Utica, Joseph and Regina Arcuri, of Liverpool, Richard and Renee Arcuri, of Holland Patent, Joan Zajac, of Nevada, and Chuck and Rose Leniek, of Endwell, NY. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Gerald D. Zajac on March 17, 2007; her sister, Catherine Sokol; and her brother, Michael Sokerka. ST. JOHNSVILLE – Mrs. Anita M. Smith, age 83, of River Road, Fort Plain, NY (Town of Danube), Indian Castle, passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon, April 25, 2014 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY. She was born on December 12, 1930 in Canajoharie, NY a daughter of the late Floyd and Irene Mitchell. She was a lifelong resident of our area. Anita attended and graduated from Van Hornesville school, class of 1946. She went on to attend college later on in life and graduated from Herkimer County Community College with a degree in early childhood development. Her marriage to Morton L. Smith took place on February 23, 1957 at Paines Hollow Church. The couple had shared in a blessed union of over 37 years until the passing of Mr. Smith on April 1, 1994. She worked at LaSalle in Little Falls at one time and was last employed with the Herkimer County Historical Society as a clerk. Survivors include her children, Jeanne LeRoy, of Fort Plain, and Larry M. Smith and his wife, Alice, of Palatine Bridge; foster sons, Randy Richards and wife, Lorraine, of Ephratah, and David Richards, of Caroga Lake; five grandchildren all of whom she so dearly loved, Amber M. ILION – Richard D. Mattison, age 65, of E. North St., Ilion, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at home. He was born on November 10, 1948, in Ilion, the son of Richard and Mary (Sedakow) Mattison, and attended Ilion High School. At one time, he was employed as a machine operator at Homogeneous Metals in Clayville. Survivors include three brothers and one sister-in-law, Mark Mattison, of Ilion, Craig and Virginia Mattison, of Ilion, and Gary Mattison, of Whitesboro; his aunt, Julia Ferdula, of Herkimer; his niece, Sandra Ham and her husband, Jasper, of Mohawk; his nephew, Rodney Broadbent and his wife, Barbara, of Little Falls; and several cousins. He was born on July 29, 1934, in Erie, PA, the son of Charles and Sarah (Green) Anderson. At one time, he was married to Joan Pollock who died in 1981. SCHUYLER: Clara L. (DiMaggio) Digristina, 87, a lifelong Schuyler resident, passed away peacefully, at her home, after a brief illness on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. She is now in the hands of the Lord. At the time of her passing, she was surrounded by the love and support of her family. Born in Frankfort, NY on February 16, 1927, Clara was the daughter of the late James and Providenza (Caruso) DiMaggio. Raised and educated locally, she received her education, grades 1-8 in a country red brick school house. She then went on to graduate from Frankfort High School Class of 1945. On April 23, 1949, Clara was joined in marriage to Leo A. Digristina in St. Mary’s Church, Frankfort; the couple having a blessed union of 65 years and sharing in a wonderful and loving relationship filled with great affection and admiration. They made their home in Schuyler and were parishioners of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, North Utica. Clara and Leo owned and operated the “Digristina Farms” in Schuyler, running a very successful dairy farm and road side vegetable stand, having the love of their consumers. In the beginning, it was a hard life; long hours, long summers, but in spite of the obstacles, Clara and Leo worked side by side, making it a successful venture. Leo said, “Behind a successful man, there is a good woman” and she was that and more, our cup runneth over. Clara valued her role in life as matriarch of her family. She was a warm, caring and loving person showing compassion for her loved ones. Her life was devoted to her husband, children and grandchildren and she will be sadly missed. Clara was survived by her beloved family, her husband Leo; her three children, James (Joan) Digristina, Leonard (Pat) Digristina and Clarice (Joseph) Flint; her cherished grandchildren, Jamie Digristina, Lee Digristina, Katie (Todd) Beaton, Gabriel (Vianna) Digristina, Celeste (Troy) Bamann, Leonard James Digristina, Vanessa (James) Stephany, Joseph (Theresa) Flint and Christopher Flint; her great grandchildren, Tanner Digristina, Stella and Emma Beaton, Grayson, Levi and Dane Digristina, Noah and Lylah HerrNeckar, Audrey, Lydia and Fiona Stephany and Joseph and Catherine Flint. She is also survived by her in-laws, Mary Gerace, Rose Juliano, Cecelia Amey, Clara Lidano, Mary Digristina, Bill Amey and Tony Spohn and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Caruso; brothers, Joe and Cross Nicastro, sisters, Rose Manino, Ann Carney and Lucy Digristina; her in-laws, Nancy Spohn, Rosario Digristina, Joe Lidano, Dominick Gerace and Joseph Juliano, Betty Nicastro, Dorothy Nicastro, Pete Digristina, Jack Carney and Sam Manino. In lieu of floral arrangements, those wishing to make a contribution in Clara’s memory may donate to either the Schuyler Volunteer Ambulance Fund or the St. Mark’s Memorial Fund; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Enea Family Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd, Town of Frankfort, Ilion, NY (315)894-8000. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Clara’s funeral service on Saturday, May 3, 2014, beginning at 12:00 p.m. from the chapel of the funeral home and at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 440 Keyes Rd., North Utica, NY 13502 celebrated by The Reverend Mark A. Pasik, Pastor, assisted by Deacon Richard Prusko. Procession will then follow to West Schuyler Cemetery, Newport Road, Schuyler, where she will be laid to rest. ILION – Dorothy Mae “Dottie” Rowland, age 77, of Ilion, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday morning May 2, 2014, in Utica. She had been residing at the Mohawk Valley Health Care Center in Ilion. Dorothy was born September 20,1936, in the town of Warren, the daughter of Mae Miller Osborn and Leon Griffin and her step father Donald Osborn, of Richfield Springs. She was a very devoted mother and grandmother. We will always remember her great smile which she never lost in all her years of battling with her Multiple Sclerosis. She shared many happy years with her ex-husband James “Jimbo” Rowland. She was predeceased by her daughter, Faith Ann Rowland; a grandson, David Talbot; and many siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Seamon and her fiancé, Tim Warner, and Susan Hurteau and her husband, Charles Hurteau; grandchildren, James Talbot, Todd Coonradt, Shannon Perkett, Tanya James, Tracy Shufelt,and Jessie LaBella; and many great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 7th from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. at the Applegate-Day & Enea Family Funeral Home’s newly reopened location at 102 West Street, Ilion.
